A state police helicopter was called in by the US Coast Guard in Baltimore at approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, to come to the aid of the woman, who suffered injuries less than five hours into their trip on the 960-foot Carnival Legend ship.
The cruise, which was heading to Nassau in the Bahamas, was approximately seven miles east of Point Lookout when the Aviation Command got the emergency call to come to the rescue.
Once at the scene of boat, the pilots were able to maneuver the helicopter over the cruise ship, at which point a trooper was dropped to the deck of the vessel to evaluate the woman’s condition.
The trooper was able to secure the injured person, and then she was hoisted approximately 50 feet from the deck to the waiting helicopter above.
Troopers then airlifted the woman to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo for additional treatment and evaluation.
Her condition was not immediately available on Monday, April 17.
